It's an acknowledgment of our tradition as a society, handed down through the generations, which makes it even more valuable. Founded in 1906 by Funeral Director William Sullivan, the business for many years was located on Main Street in Royal Oak, first at the northwest corner of Main and Second Street, and a short time later at the northeast corner of Main and Third Streets. William Sullivan also operated a flourishing livery business at this location until 1923, when automobiles had replaced horses. He was a charter member of the Royal Oak Volunteer Fire Department, and later its chief.

Ray and Meg Lope', co-owners of Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors, and Cardinal Adam Maida, archbishop of Detroit, were among those participating in the groundbreaking festivities for the New Austin Catholic Academy. The groundbreaking was the culmination of a decade-long effort by committed parents and the Archdiocese of Detroit to build a co-educational high school in northern Macomb County. Meg serves as the Communications chairperson for Austin Catholic Academy while Ray has been instrumental in fund-raising efforts.

Ray Lope of Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors to Serve on National Committee for the National Funeral Directors Association.


Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors of Royal Oak, Mich. and Utica, Mich. recently received the prestigious 2007 Pursuit of Excellence award from the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA).

Raymond Lope, co-owner of Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors, has been asked to serve as a representative on the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA) Pursuit of Excellence Work Group. Lope's commitment demonstrates a profound dedication to the funeral service profession.

"We are happy that Raymond has taken on this important leadership role with NFDA," said NFDA Chief Executive Officer Christine Pepper, CAB. "Their work in the coming year will make NFDA a stronger organization and improve the quality of service our members provide to families each and every day."

As a member of the Pursuit of Excellence Work Group, Lope will assist in the promotion and administration of NFDA's premier awards program, Pursuit of Excellence, and will review 2007-2008 Pursuit of Excellence entries.

The Pursuit of Excellence award is a mark of distinction in funeral service. To be recognized in the program a funeral home must meet these strict quality service criteria:
  • Compliance with state and federal regulations
  • Continuing education and staff development
  • Family outreach and support
  • Community service and education
  • Professional association service and participation
  • Marketing, advertising and public relations
