Carol Smith Cox

Carol Smith Cox, 77, died after a brief illness on October 23, 2019. Born in Detroit on November 14, 1941, Carol was the daughter of Louis and Jane Smith. She grew up in Grosse Pointe, MI, graduating from Grosse Pointe High School in 1959. She graduated from Michigan State University in 1963 with a bachelor’s degree in home economics, doing her college field work at Marshall Fields in Chicago. She worked at J.L. Hudson’s right after graduation, and later went on to work at Detroit Edison as an electric living adviser. Married to John Cox in 1968, they would have celebrated 51 years on November 23. They had two children, Ted and Deb. Carol enjoyed being a homemaker, but once her children were grown, she and her husband, who was early retired from Coastal Corp. (formerly American Natural Resources Co.), opened a business together, The Ink Well in Auburn Hills. They eventually broke off from that franchise agreement and ran the independently owned Allegro Printing for a number of years. Carol’s last job was at her favorite store, the Hallmark cards and gifts shop at Somerset Mall. When her children were growing up, Carol was involved with both the Boy and Girl Scouts, and taught Sunday school. Carol was a member of Chapter AK of the P.E.O. Sisterhood for almost 50 years. She also was a past member of the Village Women’s Club, where she served on the Flower Committee. Carol loved poetry and was a longtime poet herself. Survivors include her husband, John; their two children, Ted (Domonica) Cox and Deb (Isaac) Giron; her grandchildren Theo and Emma Cox, Eryce Wilcoxson, and Micah Giron; her sister Anne (Drew) Becker; her nieces Sally (Greg) Gilreath and Kathy (Jim) Reeves, and nephews Bill (Maggie) McGillicuddy and Mike (Traci) McGillicuddy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the one of the six P.E.O. projects or the Michigan P.E.O. Fund, Inc. The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 2 from 12 noon until time of the memorial service 1 pm at Wm.
