Lena Bokas

Lena Rose Bokas (née Reames), a resident of Chesterfield Township, Michigan, and formerly of Southgate for over 60+ years, passed away peacefully at the age of 96 on Friday, May 19, 2023. She was born on March 25, 1927, in Galion, Ohio, to her loving parents Charles and Cora (née Porter) Reames. Lena was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many through her involvement in various community activities and her dedication to her family. Lena was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wyandotte, Michigan, where she found solace and purpose. She generously volunteered her time and energy in preparing meals for fundraisers, organizing rummage sales, and assisting with vacation bible school activities. Lena's devotion to her church and community was evident in her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on those around her. In addition to her church involvement, Lena was actively engaged in her children's schools, serving as a devoted room mom and volunteering during local elections. Her presence and support were invaluable to the school community, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of the students and staff. Lena's life journey began in Galion, Ohio, but it was in River Rouge, Michigan, where she spent her formative years after her family relocated. On November 1, 1947, Lena married the love of her life, Louis Bokas, and they established their home in Southgate in 1951. Together, they created a loving and nurturing environment for their family. Lena was preceded in death by her cherished husband, Louis E. Bokas Jr. She leaves behind a lasting legacy as a devoted and loving mother to her children: David (Jan) Bokas, Deborah (the late Kim) Nelson, and Terrie (Dennis) Hadel. Lena's unconditional love extended to her grandchildren: Luke (Alison) Bokas, Ryan (Tiffany) Bokas, Kimberly Dangerfield, Stephanie Nelson, LeeAnn (T.J.) Steenholdt, Lindsey (Matt) Luchi, and Karly (Mike) Baisden. She was also a doting "G.G." to her 14 great-grandchildren, who brought immeasurable joy to her life. Lena was preceded in death by her siblings: Charles (Louise) Reames, Robert (Joan) Reames, and Beatrice (Lowell) Healy. She held a special place in her heart for her niece Pamela (Anthony) Oberdzinski and many other nieces and nephews, who cherished her as a caring and loving aunt. Lena Rose Bokas will be remembered for her selflessness, unwavering faith, and dedication to her family and community. Her warm smile, compassionate nature, and nurturing spirit touched the hearts of all who knew her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness that will continue to inspire generations to come. Lena will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
