Phyllis M. Thorpe

Phyllis M. Thorpe, age 83, of Royal Oak, passed away on January 16, 2022. Beloved wife of the late Gerald. Loving mother of Susan (Lyla Reichart) Dawson, Jeffrey (the late Carol) Thorpe, and Christine (Matthew) Arthur. Proud grandmother of Ryan Dawson, Steven Dawson, Samantha (Kevin) Whalen, Allison Arthur, Katherine (Ewen) Reichart-Fraser, and the late Lisa Dawson; and great-grandmother of Cristian Dawson, Gunner Dawson, Addison Dawson, Oakley Fraser, and the late Raiden Dawson. Dear sister of Barbara (Howard) Bradshaw, George (Lynda) Decker, Marjorie (Rory) Swan, Gerald Decker, Sandra (Peter) Miminaugh, and the late George Decker. Phyllis served as a longtime 5th grade teacher at Fox Elementary in the Chippewa Valley school district. In her free time, she loved to travel, especially when she was taking cruises and visiting historical sites throughout the U.S. Closer to home, Phyllis enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and attending musicals and theater shows. And she enjoyed following her hometown sports teams—Tigers, Red Wings, and U of M in particular. Phyllis was especially fond of her grandchildren and cherished spending time with them—watching her grandboys play sports and her granddaughters participate in dance and theater. And she had a strong faith that she exercised serving as a Sunday School teacher and other active participation in her churches over the years—first with St. John Episcopal Church in Royal Oak and later with First Presbyterian Church of Madison Heights. Phyllis was deeply loved by her family and friends and will be dearly missed. Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 20, from 4 - 8 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd. (4 blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. Additional visitation will take place on Friday, January 21, from 10:00 a.m. until time of service, 11:30 a.m., at the funeral home.
