Bernard John Cook Jr.

Cook, Bernard John Jr., age 83, of West Bloomfield, formerly a longtime resident of Royal Oak and Bloomfield Hills, passed away on August 9, 2016. He was born April 12, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Bernard Sr. and Adelaide Cook (née Bednarz), first generation Polish immigrants whose original name was Kucharczyk. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1951 and married Mary Ann Ruth Jensen on February 25, 1956 in Detroit. Mary Ann preceded Bernard in death, passing away in December 2015. Bernard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and then graduated from the Philpot School of Body Drafting in 1959. He held design engineering positions for General Motors, Ford Motor Company and Chrysler Corporation. After 28 years at Chrysler, Bernard retired to pursue his passion for dealing antiques with Mary Ann as The Cellar Dwellers. For over 17 years they maintained booths at Holly's Water Tower and Northville's Knightsbridge antique malls. Bernard was particularly interested in antique furniture and old toys. Bernard's other passions were automobiles and Detroit Tigers baseball. His summers were spent restoring vintage automobiles in the garage and listening to the Tiger's radio broadcasts. His favorite restorations were a '58 Porsche and a '62 Thunderbird. His favorite Tigers moment was their 1968 World Series comeback victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Bernard's children and grandchildren were his world and he relished the time spent with them. He was the loving father of John (Katie) Cook, Greg Cook, Vince (Annette) Cook, Kris (Dave) Smith, Jerome (Lisa) Cook, and the late Colin (Diane) Cook; proud grandfather of Daniel and Chris Cook; Kimberly (Jeff) Timmington and Karla Cook; Jule and Jonas Cook; Michael (Samantha Jandro) Smith; Alison and Matthew Cook; Katie, Nicholas, Audrey, and the late Emily Cook; and great grandfather of Mae Timmington and Micah Smith; and brother of the late Hubert Cook. A memorial celebration of Bernard's and Mary Ann's lives will be held Friday, August 12, 2016 from 3-8 p.m. at the Wm.
