Eve D. Gottschalk

Eve Gottschalk, a kind and devoted wife and mother of three and a resident of Royal Oak for more than 60 years, passed away in Clarkston on Sept. 2. She was 93. Eva Dorthea was born in Sault Ste. Marie in 1922 to Frank and Vivian Campanaro. The family moved to Pontiac in 1926 and Eve graduated from Pontiac High School in 1941. She married Charles Gottschalk in 1948. Eve was a trailblazer for her family members, who immigrated to the United States from Southern Italy. She was one of the original feminists, although she probably would take exception to that characterization. She attended Michigan State College and UCLA in the 1940s, when not many young women went to college. She was a working mom long before the trend took hold. Eve was a wife and mom first, but she was also a vital, independent woman who pursued her own interests. She was outspoken on a variety of topics, always stayed on top of the news of the day and she was an enthusiastic story-teller. Eve was a vibrant woman, who worked out regularly at the Silhouette Club for more than four decades. She organized golf leagues, coached a couple girls' sports teams and was a devout Catholic and highly active in Shrine of the Little Flower Catholic Church in Royal Oak. Eve was a member of the Shrine Ladies' Guild, which tended to the elderly of the Parish. She was certificated from the American Banking Institute. Eve was predeceased by her husband, Charles, to whom she was married for 48 years. She is survived by two sons, Charles (Amalia) Gottschalk of Owings Mill, Maryland and Gerard (Dawn) Gottschalk of Clarkston; one daughter, Lori (Mark) Hornbeck of Lansing; four grandchildren, Cassandra, Christopher, Joelle and Matthew; and many other close relatives in Michigan and across the country. Visitation will be at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd., Royal Oak, from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, with Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday, Sept. 7 at Shrine of the Little Flower, 2100 12 Mile Rd., Royal Oak at 9:30 a.m., with Mass at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Make-A-Wish Foundation of America at wish.org<
