Gene Edward Gies

Gene Edward Gies, from Clinton Township, born on July 14, 1947, passed on January 1, 2024, surrounded by the love of his family. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Gene's legacy is one marked by love, loyalty, and dedication to family. Gene is survived by his children: Kelly (James) Slebodnik, Jessica (Murray) Eaton, and Amanda (David) Stover, each a testament to his enduring love and commitment; his grandchildren: Coyce, Reilly, Madison, Grace, Gabriel, Sela, Sadie, and Sloane, who brought joy and laughter to his days; his brother: Dale (Grace) Gies, and his loving nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his beloved wife: Cathy Gies (née Brady), his parents: Frank and Bette Gies (née Eyster), and his brother: Cary (Michelle) Gies. In the spirit of service, Gene answered the call of duty and proudly served tours in both Korea and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. Upon his return from overseas, he met the love of his life Cathy, and frequently credited her with having saved his life. Gene's professional journey led him to a fulfilling career as an automotive designer with General Motors, where he contributed his skills, talents, and decades long experience until his retirement in 2017. While his girls grew, Gene enjoyed coaching their t-ball and softball teams. In later years, he happily pursued a love of travel with his honey. They went on numerous trips to Hawaii and Florida, as well as Caribbean and Alaskan cruises. While their adventures included cruising around on his Harley, he was equally content with simpler things like poking around Costco, so long as she was by his side. He loved making memories with his grandchildren with NASCAR races, motorcycle rides, footlong hotdogs, lakeside "guck" watching, and snuggling on the couch for a movie night complete with Haribo gummy bears, some Muppets, or a Detroit Lions game. In celebrating Gene's life, let us remember the laughter he shared, the wisdom he imparted, and the love he generously gave. As we bid farewell to this remarkable man, may we find comfort in the knowledge that his spirit lives on in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him. A visitation will take place on Thursday, January 4, from 2-8pm, at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Rd., Utica. (3blks E. of Van Dyke). A funeral service will be held the following day on Friday, January 5, at 11am, at the funeral home.
