Jay Michael Miller

Jay Michael Miller, affectionately known as "Grumpa," passed away peacefully of natural causes on Saturday, September 5, 2026, in Novi, Michigan. He was 68 years old. Jay was the beloved husband of Susan Michele (Bensman) Miller and the devoted father of Rebecca Anne Miller and Elyse Rene Miller. He was the proud grandfather of Charles Maxwell Miller-Burke and a cherished friend to his feline companion, Eli. He was the son of the late Jess and Sylvia Miller. Jay is survived by his sister, Joan Feldman, and was preceded in death by his sisters, Linda Erlich and Susan Hopps. A lifelong resident of the Metro Detroit area, Jay attended Henry Ford High School in Detroit. He was a true Mr. Fix-It-someone who could be counted on when something needed repairing, building, figuring out, or simply making it work again. He took great joy and pride in helping others with his skills, his knowledge, and his willingness to lend a hand. For Jay, fixing something was often about much more than the repair itself; it was one of the ways he showed that he cared. Jay was a man of deep faith who loved the Lord Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus the Messiah. He was an active member of Congregation Shema Yisrael in Bloomfield Hills, MI, where he was also a faithful behind-the-scenes helper. His service to others was often quiet and unassuming, but it was an important part of who he was. Jay had a love for the things that brought him joy: rock 'n' roll, classic cars, collectibles, burgers, and bacon. He had a personality all his own, and those who knew him best will remember his humor, his opinions, his willingness to help, and, of course, the name that became synonymous with him to his family-Grumpa. Two songs captured something of Jay's outlook on life. He lived by the reminder: "You can't always get what you want But if you try sometime you'll find You get what you need." And perhaps fittingly, he leaves his loved ones with another sentiment: "It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right I hope you had the time of your life." Jay's family takes comfort in his faith and in the hope of being reunited with him again. Though his absence leaves an immeasurable space in the lives of those who loved him, his memory will live on in the people he helped, the things he fixed, the faith he shared, and the family he loved. A private graveside service will be held for close family and friends. A celebration of Jay's life will take place at a later date.
