Doug Farmer

John "Doug" Farmer, of Clinton Township, formerly of Shelby Township, passed away on October 24, 2020 at the age of 69. Doug was born on June 16, 1951 in Mayfield, Kentucky to Ernie and Dorothea "Mae" Farmer. Doug was the third of their nine children, but he was their eldest son. In 1954, Doug's family made their way to Michigan where they settled down. He loved to play baseball as a child, and he taught his brothers to play. Doug enjoyed being outdoors, and especially loved to fish. Doug graduated from Utica High School in 1969. Doug then made his way to Central Michigan University where he studied business. After college, he got a job at Ford Motor Company. Doug was a dedicated and loyal employee, working at Ford's for 30 years until his retirement. Doug met the love of his life, Ellen, and the two became one on July 31, 2019. Doug loved his family, and he greatly enjoyed being an uncle. He was an avid sports fan. Doug had some health issues during his years, but he was a strong person. He continued to find courage to fight until his last days. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Ernie and Mae, siblings, Kay (survived by Jerry) and Jeff (survived by Renae). Doug is the cherished husband of Ellen Sassanella; the loving brother of Cindy, Tony (Denise), Ronnie, Jayne (Tom), Carolyn (Ken), and Brian; the dear step-father of Lisa and Dave; the adored step-grandfather of Savannah and Lathan; and the beloved uncle of 15 nieces and nephews. Doug's family will receive friends on Thursday, October 29, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 8459 Hall Road (3 blocks East of Van Dyke), Utica. A funeral service will be held on Friday, October 30, 2020, visitation from 10:00 a.m. until his service at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
