Joseph Valentine Guarino

Joseph Valentine Guarino, age 89, of Berkley, passed away peacefully on May 23, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, artistry, and devotion to family that will continue for generations. Born on February 14, 1937, in Brooklyn to Italian immigrants William and Carmela Guarino, Joe carried with him throughout his life the values of hard work, loyalty, creativity, and deep family connection. Even as a child, his remarkable intellect stood out-he was advanced a grade during elementary school-and his artistic talent soon became evident as a student at the New York School of Industrial Art in Manhattan, where he developed a gift for illustration that remained a lifelong passion. In 1953, the Guarino family moved to Michigan, where fate would soon intervene in the form of an "errant toss" of a ball. That moment led Joe to meet the love of his life, Patricia. Together, Joe and Pat built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, humor, and unwavering love. They recently celebrated an extraordinary 70 years of marriage, a milestone that reflected the strength and joy of their lifelong partnership. Joe spent his career supervising commercial painting projects, bringing diligence, leadership, and pride to his work. But those who knew him best will remember him most for the way he made people feel. Joe possessed a storyteller's gift and an astonishing memory filled with vivid details that transformed ordinary moments into unforgettable tales. Family gatherings were brighter because of him. His warmth, humor, and magnetic personality could light up any room, and his deep devotion to his loved ones was evident in everything he did. Joe and Pat were blessed with five children: Patricia (Jay), Susan (Bernard), Catherine (Steve), Theresa (Tom), and William (Sarah). Their family continued to grow with twelve cherished grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a ninth great-grandchild joyfully on the way. Joe is survived by sister Marie of Paris, France, and was preceded in death by brother Carmine and sister Anna. Though deeply missed, Joe's family takes comfort in the countless stories, lessons, laughter, and memories he leaves behind. His was truly a life well lived and well loved. Visitation for Joseph will be held Wednesday, May 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Knights of Columbus Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m., at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors. The Funeral Mass will be held Thursday, May 28, at 10:00 a.m. (in-state beginning at 9:30 a.m.) at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica. Interment will follow at Roseland Park Cemetery.
