Joseph John Wylie

Joseph John Wylie, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on April 8, 2023, at the age of 100. Joe was born in Westbury, New York in 1923, to the late Joseph and Fanny Wylie. Joe is survived by his beloved wife of 76 years, Betty Jane Wylie (nee Wissler). Loving father of Linda (Mark) Duane and father-in-law of Ruth Wylie. He was a proud grandfather of Stephen (Tiffany) Duane and Lauren (Martin) Wysor. As well as a great-grandfather of Talen, Trace and Leland. He was preceded in death by his son Bruce Douglas Wylie. Joe attended Westbury Elementary and Westbury High School, where he played Point Guard on the High School basketball team. Joe's love for basketball continued throughout his life. Joe attended college at State University of New York, Oswego and was on the basketball team and designed the cover of the 1942 college yearbook. He transferred to Franklin & Marshall in Pennsylvania for the Marines Troop Leaders program. Upon graduation, he served in the Marines for 6 years as a First Lieutenant. Joe was a man of many talents and interests. He started working young as a pin setter at a bowling alley, working at the neighboring Hicks Nursery & Garden Center, as well as riding polo ponies from an estate on Long Island to the Meadow Brook Country Club for polo matches. Joe was an accomplished Sales Engineer and worked for Bearing Company of America (BCA) and Federal Mogul Corporation. Joe was an avid golfer and never took a lesson in his life, carrying a 2 handicap. His golf skills served him well, flying on the corporate jet with the President of Federal Mogul to golf at numerous courses around the country. Joe passed his love of golf down to his children and grandchildren, making many fond memories together on the course. Joe and Betty lived in many states throughout their lives and made lifelong friends in each place they called home. They were members of a dance club while they lived in Illinois and were avid Bridge players, tennis players, and loved to get together with friends to play Dominoes, Sequence, and Euchre. Joe was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be deeply missed. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren will always remember him for his kind heart, infectious smile, and unwavering love for his family. A private inurnment will take place at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan. Please feel free to share a memory of Joseph on the Tribute Wall.
