Lois Nichols

Lois Nichols, 93, of Huntington Woods, MI, passed away on November 18, 2023. She was born on December 19, 1929, the daughter of Edward Matyn and Eva Mayer in Detroit, MI. Lois demonstrated a compassionate spirit from an early age and dedicated her life to serving others. After graduating from Dominican High School, Lois continued her education at Sienna Heights University, where she pursued a degree in Sociology. Her commitment to family became evident when, just before completing her studies, she faced the loss of her mother. In response, Lois selflessly took on the responsibility of caring for her younger siblings, showcasing her nurturing nature and resilience. Lois's professional journey as a social worker, led her to the healthcare industry, where she spent the majority of her career providing support and care to those in need. Even after retiring, her dedication to service persisted as she became a chaplain's assistant at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, offering comfort and solace to individuals facing challenging times. Additionally, Lois served as a lecturer, eucharistic minister and sacristan at St. Mary's Catholic Church, exemplifying her deep connection to her faith. A woman of unwavering faith, Lois regularly attended Sunday and Wednesday Mass with her daughter, finding solace and strength in her spiritual beliefs. In her leisure time, she immersed herself in the world of literature, amassing a notable collection of books that reflected her intellectual curiosity, spirituality, and love for storytelling. Lois is survived by her loving children, Martin (Brenda) and Anne Mary (Peter Zagone) Nichols, daughter-in-law, Kathryn Nichols, as well as grandchildren Amanda (Chris) Hess, Andrea Nichols, Christopher and Nicholas Zagone, Letsabisa Mthombeni, and Jennifer and William Nichols, five great-grandchildren, and a close family friend, Aksana Ivanova. She is preceded in death by her husband, Christ Nichols, her parents, Edward and Eva Matyn, her son, Gregory and her siblings, Harold, Richard, Sally, and Nancy. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at the visitation, which will be held at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Directors (705 W. Eleven Mile, Royal Oak, MI 48067) on Sunday, November 26, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Prayer service and Sharing of Memories will commence at 6:00 p.m. on the same day. The Funeral Mass will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Royal Oak, MI, on Monday, November 27, 2023, starting at 10:00 a.m., preceded by an instate period beginning at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial contributions to Manna Community Meal.
