Maggie Henkel

Henkel, Margaret "Maggie" Newell. Age 90. Eighty year resident of Birmingham passed away in Royal Oak on January 2, 2016. Margaret was born on March 16, 1925 to the late Frank and Hazel Newell in Detroit. They lived briefly in Rosedale Park before settling in Birmingham. Margaret spent many winters as a child figure skating on Quarton Lake. Summers were filled with dances at the Community House and meals at all of the hot spots along Woodward. Following the war, she married Frederick H. Henkel. Margaret began studies at the University of Michigan and was a lifelong fan of Michigan football, but during the war she dropped out to work for Birmingham's Ration Board. During that time she developed a love for bridge and gathering with friends. As a result, she became a 30+ year member of the Women's Village Club bridge group. Over the years, Margaret worked for both the University of Michigan doing research at Willow Run as well as Erb Lumber. She spent a great deal of her working career at Ford Motor Company in the real estate division. More than anything else, Margaret was a great friend to everyone she met. She was always interested in what was going on with you. She was often referred to as "my favorite …" and people always remembered her smile and beautiful blue eyes. Loving mother of Frederick W. (Elizabeth), Karen J., Andrew J., and the late Margaret L. Spitzley.; proud grandmother of Jason M. Spitzley and Kelly A. Potter; great grandmother to Maggie G. Potter, John O. Potter, and Allison S. Potter; dear sister to the late Elizabeth (John) Vander Roest and Frances (Robert) Warner. Devoted aunt to six, their spouses and all of their children as well as a newly born great-great niece. Memorial gathering Wednesday from 10 am until time of service at noon at the Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Road (4 blocks E of Woodward), Royal Oak.
