Myles V. Maddox

Myles Victor Maddox, a long time Michigan resident, passed away peacefully from natural causes on December 18 in Sarasota, FL. He relocated to Sarasota in 2021, where he was able to spend time with family, get away from the cold Michigan winters, and make new friends. Myles served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman during WW II. He earned a bachelor's degree in education at Eastern Michigan University and a master's degree in political science at Wayne State University. His tenure with the Detroit Public School System, primarily at Chadsey High School, lasted for 33 of his 38-year teaching career. Myles lived in Pleasant Ridge for just over 56 years. He had a kind and compassionate heart for animals. Over the years, the family home always had one or more pet cats. Neighborhood critters, especially birds and squirrels, could always find seeds and nuts left for them in the backyard. When walking in the community with Marilyn, his beloved wife of 68 years, Myles was often seen taking a neighbor's dog with them and giving treats to other dogs in the neighborhood they would pass along the way. One of Myles' favorite activities was sitting on the sun porch overlooking the backyard while reading the morning paper and drinking a cup of coffee. Myles was a big fan of Michigan State University football and basketball teams. Myles was an avid and passionate bridge player. Marilyn was his favorite playing partner. They traveled the country competing in various regional and national tournaments. Myles was especially proud of achieving Platinum Life Master status as a member of the American Contract Bridge League. Myles is survived by his two sons, Marc and Mason (Diane); three grandchildren, Merideth (Jed), Mason, and Matthew; and his lone great grandchild, Suzanna, who occupied a special place in his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and son, Mitchell. Visitation will be Friday, January 10 from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration be given to making charitable donations in Myles' name to the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center in Pontiac, or the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit.
