Neva Ellen Callihan

Neva Callihan, 81, a 57 year resident of Royal Oak, went peacefully, from her home, to be with God on the morning of April, 8, 2021. Born March 1, 1940, in Royal Oak, to Clyde and Ellen (Geiger) Tremper, she is survived by her husband, Donald, Royal Oak; her children James (Deborah) Callihan, Waterford, Susan (John) Showers, Royal Oak, Jeffrey Callihan, Whitefish, Montana and Melissa (Martin) Carey, Troy; her grandchildren Jacob and Jessica Showers, Royal Oak and Mya Carey, Troy; and her brother, Richard Tremper, Concrete, Washington. She was preceded in death by her sisters May Ann White, Judith Kay and Carol Hoover, and her brother, John Tremper. Neva loved children and volunteered at both Churchill and Northwood Elementary Schools. This love carried over to her career at the Birmingham location of Jacobson's Stores, Inc., where she worked in the 1980s and 90s as a sales associate in the Boy's Department. She was a member of North Hills Christian Reformed Church, Troy, Clawson United Methodist Women and Jacobson's Stores Retirees Group. One of her favorite pastimes was purchasing baby clothing to donate to the Clawson United Methodist Women's Layette Project that provides an initial supply of baby clothing to disadvantaged mothers. Neva was a quiet person who overcame numerous obstacles in her early life to become a successful and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Upon learning that Neva was in hospice, a long-time friend whom she had not seen for many years wrote to her: "My mind is filled with so many thoughts of us with our children, laughing and playing. Neva, you taught me so much - I know you went through a difficult childhood, but you had this calm, joyous way about you that always made me feel that we would be all right. I thank you for helping me believe I could be strong and kind like you. Whatever happens, please know I love you so much and will always strive to be the sweet, kind, generous and beautiful person you are." Visitation occurred on April 18, 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Road (4 blocks E of Woodward), Royal Oak. Private interment was at Roseland Park Cemetery, Berkley.
