Richard Hazy

Richard John Hazy, born August 15, 1946, in Colver, Pennsylvania, passed away on August 15, 2026, in Troy, Michigan, on his 80th birthday. Richard was the son of the late Pete Hazy and Mary Volosin Hazy. He is survived by his wife, Carol (Rogers) Hazy; children Andrew Hazy (Rachel), Diane Pontiatowski (Denny), Brian Lezotte (Julie), and Bernie Lezotte; Andrew's mother, Madelon Ward; and grandchildren Alexander, Jacob, and Drew Hazy, Chloe and Gabriel Lezotte, Arden Pommerville (Jeremiah), with children Aurora and Ty, and Emily Walls (Marc), with children Piper and Margot. Richard proudly served his country in the United States Navy Seabees, a chapter of his life that reflected his dedication, work ethic, and commitment to service. A retired architect, Richard spent many years with SSOE in Troy, Michigan, where he built not only a successful career but also many lasting friendships. He especially enjoyed the camaraderie of playing for years in the company golf league with his colleagues. Richard had a profound passion for horse racing, and one of his greatest traditions was attending the Kentucky Derby, an event he experienced in person nearly 50 times. He proudly shared many of those Derby trips with his best friend, Andy Sakmar, along with a close-knit group of fellow horse racing friends and his sons, Andrew and Brian. The friendships, traditions, stories, and memories formed through their shared love of the sport became a treasured part of his life. Family was a great source of joy for Richard. He loved attending his grandchildren's baseball, soccer, and basketball games and took great pride in supporting them from the sidelines. Richard also found happiness in the simple traditions and interests that made life special. He was a devoted fan of Jimmy Buffett and proudly considered himself a "Parrothead." He looked forward each year to his Florida vacation in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea with Carol, a tradition they cherished together. He had a stream of four-legged friends over the years, most recently his beloved Bichon, Louie. Richard was also an avid reader with a particular interest in biographies, always drawn to learning about the lives, experiences, and stories of others. Richard will be remembered for his love of family, his loyalty to his friends, his many passions, and the traditions he held dear. Whether at the Kentucky Derby, on the golf course, cheering on his grandchildren, relaxing in Florida, listening to Jimmy Buffett, enjoying a good book, or spending time with Louie, Richard embraced the people and things that brought meaning and happiness to his life. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. The family will celebrate Richard's life privately.
