Santina Newberry

Santina Newberry, a resident of Rochester Hills, formerly of Washington Township and Sterling Heights, passed away on December 14, 2023 at the age of 86. The daughter of Michael and Mona Vitale, she was born on December 12, 1937 in Detroit. Santina graduated from St. Elizabeth High School in 1955 before working as a clerk at the gas company. On June 7, 1958, Santina exchanged vows with Merle Newberry at St. Gertrude's Church in St. Clair Shores. She lived her life dedicated to the Catholic faith, as an active member of multiple church communities, and volunteering to teach catechism. She loved to sing and dance, and performed in a theater group in her senior living community. Beloved Wife of the late Merle, joined in love for 64 years. Loving mother of Christine (Paul) Toski, Carol Ecker, Debra (Bruce Kaye) Cherry, Mona Tighe, Peter (Ligia), Darlene (Chris) Benson, and David (Kristina). Cherished Grandmother of Ryon, Alec, Elise, Matthew, Steven, Madison, Krystal, Kenny, Nicolas, Sebastian, Meredith, Claire, Luke, Gus, and Valentina. Proud great-grandmother of Hailey, Noah, Abigail, Eden, Rylee, and Savannah. Dear sister of Samuel (Marilyn) Vitale, Diana (the late Bart) Fiumano, Michael (Mary) Vitale Jr, Joseph (the late Carol) Vitale, Nick (Teresa) Vitale, John (Marilyn) Vitale and the late Lawrence (survived by Pavlova) Vitale and the late Mona Hartley. Santina's family will receive friends for a memorial mass on Monday, December 18, 2023, instate beginning at 10:30 a.m. until the time of her mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Irenaeus Catholic Church, 771 Old Perch Road, Rochester Hills. Family and friends are invited to attend a family celebration luncheon immediately following the funeral mass. More details will follow. Inurnment is scheduled for Saturday, December 23rd at 10:00am at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
