Agnes C. Van Antwerp

Agnes C. Van Antwerp Agnes was born in Detroit on September 2, 1926 and died at her residence in Troy on September 9, 2022. She was the eighth of eleven children born to former Mayor of Detroit, Eugene I. Van Antwerp and his wife, Mary Francis (nee McDevitt) Van Antwerp. She leaves a sister, Rita Dacia (Patrick Pollard) Van Antwerp, brother, Daniel J. (Cecelia) Van Antwerp, and sister-in-law Mary Lou (the late George) Van Antwerp. Also survived by over fifty nieces and nephews. Her education included Gesu Elementary School and the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Detroit. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in 1949, and a Master's degree in Art from Wayne State University in 1953. She taught Art at Dossin and Pasteur Public Schools in the City of Detroit. Thereafter, from about 1970 to 1985, she taught in various schools of the Warren Consolidated School System. Upon her retirement, she moved to an apartment in Palm Harbor, Florida, near her brother, Gore, who retired from the US Air Force. Finally, in 2006, she became sick with pernicious anemia. It was then that she purchased a co-op apartment in Royal Oak, Michigan. In 2018 she sold the co-op and moved to the Oxford Park Apartments in Berkley. In 2021 she moved to American House in Troy where she was a well known Bingo winner and enjoyed the retirement community and staff. She was a member of National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica and attended Mass daily. She was always kind and generous. She loved travel, art and skiing and often took her nieces and nephews with her on trips. The family will receive friends Wednesday, September 14 from 4:30 pm - 8 pm with Rosary at 6:00 pm at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd. (4 blks E. of Woodward), Royal Oak. Funeral Thursday 10 am at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, Royal Oak.
