Sr. Mary Magdalen, O.P.

November 15, 1921 - March 18, 2022

Sr. Mary Magdalen Braun, O.P. died peacefully on March 18, 2022, at home with her Sisters at the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament. She was 100 years old and in the 81 st year of her profession as a Cloistered Dominican Nun. Sr. Mary Magdalen (Anita Elizabeth Braun), was born on November 15, 1921 in Verona, New Jersey. Sister's parents, Frederick and Teresa Bauer, as well as her brothers, Theodore Braun, Vincent Braun and Norbert Braun, and her sister Bernice (Charles) James predeceased her. She is survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. Sr. Mary Magdalen entered the Monastery of St. Dominic in New Jersey on August 15, 1939 and made Profession of Vows there on June 24, 1941. That Monastery was the original foundation (1880) of Dominican Nuns in the United States. When the Monastery eventually closed in 2004, Sister transferred to the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament in Farmington Hills Michigan. Over the years, Sister served her community in various ways, many of them in leadership roles. Sister Mary Magdalen was elected Prioress several times, she served as Novice Mistress multiple times, and was a member of the leadership team (councilor) many times. Sister was one of the four founders of the Theological Formation Program, a program designed for the Junior Professed Sisters to receive sound theological formation. Even in her later years (until she was struck down by Covid in December 2020), Sister worked in our Altar Bread Dept. After Covid, Sister was confined to her bed, but her mind remained sharp. Most of all, Sr. Mary Magdalen was deeply prayerful person and had wisdom gained by her long hours of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. In her last year Sister remained cheerful, and took a keen interest in what was going on in the world, so as to pray for everyone. She was an inspiration to us all, offering her sufferings up for the salvation of souls. She will be sorely missed. May she now rest in the peace and joy of her Lord. Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 22, 2022 at the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament, 29575 Middlebelt Rd. Farmington Hills, Ml 48334. Memorial donations, in lieu of flowers, will be gratefully accepted by the Monastery of the Blessed Sacrament.
