Mary Margaret McGovern

December 15, 1948 - February 22, 2022

Mary Margaret McGovern (née Leahy), age 73, of Berkley, passed away on February 22, 2022. Beloved wife of John. Loving mother of Peggy (Kevin) McDaid, Colleen Fairbanks, Katie (Dustin) Franklin, and Martha Sly. Proud grandmother of Maxwell, Connor, Etta, and Lucas. Dear sister of Howard Leahy. Mary graduated from the University of Michigan and then worked in education as a K-12 teacher until her first child was born. She then stayed at home full-time to raise her four children, later returning to teaching once all her kids were grown. During her second career in teaching, Mary taught students in night school who were preparing to earn their GED. In her free time, Mary enjoyed reading-especially travel-related books that took the reader to different places around the world. She was also an avid movie collector. Above all else though, Mary enjoyed her children and watching them grow up, and more recently spending time with her grandchildren and seeing all the funny things they did. Mary was deeply loved by her family and will be incredibly missed. Visitation will take place on Thursday, March 3, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd. (4 blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, March 4, at 10:00 a.m. (visitation 9:30) at National Shrine of the Little Flower Basilica, 1200 Twelve Mile Rd., Royal Oak.
