September 29, 1939 - November 8, 2021
Perla Sanay Pineda, age 82, of Madison Heights, passed away on November 8, 2021. Predeceased by her beloved husband Pablo. Loving mother of Raquel and husband Jeffrey, Leticia and ex-spouse Dennis, Buboy and wife Liza, Evelyn and husband Bimbo, Teresa and husband Ernie, Johnny and ex-spouse Lea, Maria Luisa and husband Erwin, and Maria Victoria and husband Joseph. She leaves her grandchildren Dennis, Alexandria, Adam, Brian, Paulo, Aaron, Jefferlynne (Pipay), Maricris, Christian, Dominic, Carlo, Joshua, Shyrinne (Yayin), Jenny, Mark (Macmac), Michael, Mathew, Mike, Elaine, Patrick, Frederick, Lorenz, Lance, Lester, and Francesca (Cheska), and great-grandchildren Denzel, Pauleen, Levi, Lucas, Noah, Summer, AJ, Tristian, Lianne, Lexter, Lexus, Alia, Ali, and Kim. Perla grew up in the rural province of Mobo, Masbate, Philippines where she discovered her love for farming and harvesting crops. Once she started her own family, she moved to the city of Manila where she raised her eight children. There she worked hard and had her own small business in retail selling buttons and hemming clothes, before she moved to a different country at 53. After her arrival to the United States, her passion for growing vegetables and beautiful flowers stayed with her. One could say she brought the fruitful terrain of the mountains to her backyard. She would share her annual harvests with friends and family. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to sell extra yield to neighbors and members of her congregation. Even into her later years, Perla worked as an at home caregiver. Being skilled in the art of sewing, Perla used her talents to fix up her family’s torn clothes, or recycle thrifted materials into pillowcases and curtains. When she wasn’t tending to her bountiful garden, or sewing up her latest business idea, she also loved to cook for her family traditional Filipino dishes such as pancit, lumpia, and lugaw for loved ones who were feeling unwell. One of her favorite pastimes was going to estate sales and thrifting. Her family knows how much Nanay Perla loved getting a good deal. Her collection of used garments and housewares showed how resourceful she was. She knew how to make the unusable quite useful. A large part of her desire to find these various articles of clothing and items, was so that she could help give back to the rest of her family in the Philippines. Above all, Nanay loved her family. She always put her family first and creatively found ways to help her children and grandchildren both in the United States and in the Philippines. Her love shone through in the many ways she used her talents and free time to support her big lineage. She loved spending time with her family when she could visit and adored taking care of her baby grandchildren whenever possible. Visitation will take place on Thursday, November 11, from 2 - 8 p.m., with Scripture Services planned for 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Road (4 blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. Funeral Mass will take place Friday, November 12, at 9:30 a.m. (visitation 9:00 a.m.) at St. Michael Catholic Church, 40501 Hayes Rd., Sterling Heights. Burial will follow at Detroit Memorial Park Cemetery in Warren.
