Robert (Bob) Harry Giles, age 89, a longtime resident of Royal Oak, passed away on April 24, 2021. He was born in Green Island, New York, to Harry Giles and Ethelyn Hakes Giles. Bob received his undergraduate degree from Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio and then entered the U.S. Navy where he served for two years in the Hospital Corps. Upon honorable discharge, he taught biology and chemistry in the Clintondale School District and then at Oak Park High School, later earning a Master of Science degree in biology from the University of Michigan. He met Lorraine Weibel in a work carpool, and they married in 1960 at the chapel in Pine Mountain, Kentucky. Bob and Lorraine made their home in Royal Oak where they raised their three children and where Lorraine passed in 1996. Throughout his lifetime, Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and woodworking. He had a passion for inventing, creating, and repurposing materials and processes to make everyday tasks more convenient and economical. With his young family, he enjoyed cross-country skiing in winter, and camping in summer, including a summer-long road/camping trip through Canada and Alaska. Later, Bob met Sharon McCormack, also a teacher at Oak Park High, and they married in 2002 at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church. Bob was the beloved husband of Sharon Giles and the late Lorraine Giles; loving father of Karen Giles-Smith (Mitchell Smith), Kimberly Giles-Hill (Paul Hill), and the late Kevin Giles; and proud grandfather of Alyssa Bernardi, Georgia Smith, Wesley (Heather) Smith, Jackson Hill, and Alexandra Hill, and great grandfather of Madilyn Smith, Connor Smith and Everly Smith. Visitation Wed, May 5th, 3-7 pm at Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd. (4 blocks east of Woodward), Royal Oak. Please note that per Covid restrictions, masks are required to enter the funeral home, and a maximum 25 people may be in the chapel at a time. Due to family allergies, no lilies please.
