Theodore Allen Reyman

Dr. Theodore Allen "Al" Reyman One of Michigan's most accomplished and distinguished pathologists, Dr. Theodore Allen "Al" Reyman, passed away after a brief illness on March 24, 2017. He was 85. Dr. Reyman was widely acknowledged as one of the nation's leading pathologists during his 18-year tenure as Mount Carmel Hospital's Director of Laboratory Services. He also served as Medical Director, Clinical Professor of Pathology, and Director of the Pathology Residence Program at the Mercy College (now University of Detroit Mercy) School of Medicine. He retired from Mount Carmel in 1990. Dr. Reyman earned his bachelor's degree from Bowling Green State University before attending the University of Michigan Medical School where he received his M.D. in 1961. Before completing his medical degree, he served in the U.S. Army for two years. Prior to his years at Mount Carmel, Dr. Reyman interned at Harper Hospital and completed his residency training through the Wayne State University Medical Schools Affiliated Hospital Program. He served as Assistant Director of Laboratories at Hutzel Hospital from 1966 until joining the Mount Carmel staff in 1972. For more than three decades, Dr. Reyman was recognized for his significant contributions to science and his profession. More than 25 of his articles were published in scientific and medical journals. He was cofounder of the Paleopathology Association, and he was Past-President of the Michigan Society of Pathologists. He also served as a member of the International Academy of Pathology, the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and many other professional and honorary organizations. In 1976, he was selected by the International Academy of Pathology to exhibit his work at the Second World Congress of Academic and Environmental Pathology in Washington D.C. Dating back to 1970, Dr. Reyman was a leading member of a team of scientists searching for data on diseases of ancient populations. As such, he performed autopsy dissections on mummies from Egypt, Peru, Alaska and other regions of the United States. As one of the few American scientists to conduct exams of this type, his early research was crucial in identifying causes of modern-day diseases. Among his many philanthropic efforts was the establishment of a scholarship fund at Bowling Green State University. In 1978, he was honored with BGSU's Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Reyman's other passions in life included golf, working with stained glass, playing bridge with friends, and, first and foremost, his family. He was married for nearly 50 years to his loving wife, the late Donna Marie (Lemma). He was also the proud father of four children - Dominica "Mena" (Michael) Murray, Rebecca DeAnda, Sarah Borski, and Theodore A. (Kelly) Reyman III - and the adoring grandfather of eleven grandchildren. Born April 26, 1931 in Detroit, he was the son of the late Theodore A. (Beulah Mae) Reyman Sr. and predeceased by three sisters. Visitation is Tuesday 2-8 pm and funeral service is Wednesday 10 am at the Wm. Sullivan and Son Funeral Home, 705 W. 11 Mile Rd., Royal Oak.
