Walter Daris

With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce that our father, Walter "Wadju" Daris unexpectedly passed away on December 31, 2024, at the age of 82. A devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend, Walter leaves behind a legacy of love, humor, and dedication that will be cherished by all who knew him. Walter shared a beautiful 50-year marriage with his late wife, Janet (née Aponoves), who now welcomes him in Heaven. He was the proud and loving father of Michelle (Jonathan) Finnegan, Christopher Daris, and Michael Daris, and the adoring grandfather to his five grandchildren: Erica, Damian, Joey, Ashley, and Scarlett. He was a dear brother to Chester, Thomas (the late Linda), and Fred (Marie). He is predeceased by his parents, Chester and Anna (née Klisz) Daris, and his brother, Daniel (Sandra) Daris. Walter is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Walter was a man of many talents. As a highly skilled engineer, his sharp intellect and problem-solving skills amazed everyone who knew him. He spent his career working at Chrysler and General Dynamics where he engineered tanks, their parts and packages that were shipped around the world. His hard work provided an incredible life for his family, allowing his wife, Janet, to devote herself to raising their three children. Growing up, Walter played nearly every sport imaginable, from baseball to golf-and even tap dancing. This began his deep love for sports. Although he did not grow up in Boston, they became his favorite team to cheer for in any sport - especially the Boston Red Sox. As a young child, both he and his brother, Tom enjoyed watching his favorite player, Ted Williams play baseball. This (or maybe his hatred of the NY Yankees) turned him into a lifelong, devoted Boston Red Sox fan. You could always find him wearing a Boston hat, gear or drinking out of a Boston cup. He was tickled in 1997, when Boston named their mascot "Wally the Green Monster." This summer, he made his first trip to Boston, toured the city and got to see a game at Fenway Park with his two sons. Walter's love and dedication to his country was evident during his lifetime. He was very proud to be an American and remained a steadfast patriot throughout his life. He loved comedy shows and movies, and his natural humor made him king of the "dad jokes". Walter enjoyed reading books on history and solving all types of puzzles. He loved politics and keeping up with current events. His goofy, outgoing personality endeared him to friends, family, and even strangers. His special bond with his brother Tom was particularly remarkable; they were the best of friends who lived across the street from each other for over 52 years. Walter's warmth, intelligence, and unwavering devotion to his family will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him. Relatives and friends are invited to join the family to honor Walter's life. A memorial mass will take place on Saturday, January 25, 2025, with memorial visitation at 8:30am until the time of the mass at 9:30am at St. Blase Parish, 12151 15 Mile Rd, in Sterling Heights.
