Alfred O. Manteuffel

Alfred Otto Manteuffel of Warren, 88, died August 16, 2026, at HFH Ascension Warren. He was born January 14, 1938, in Oak Park, Illinois to Alfred O. F. and Grethe (Petersen) Manteuffel. On August 6, 1960, he married his best friend, Virginia (Oswald), in Detroit. They enjoyed a memorable honeymoon in Wisconsin at a Boy Scout camp. She preceded him in death on Oct. 24, 2018. He referred to his early educational pursuits as lackluster, having "flunked sandbox" -- and graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School in 1955. During his six-year stint with the U.S. Army Reserves in the early 1960s, Sgt. Al was proud to report that no marauding Canadians invaded Fort Leavenworth while he was on duty! In 1968, he and Ginny appeared on a trivia quiz show called Dream House. They were the champions for two games, winning complete kitchen and living room sets. They never forgot about Nellie Bly -- the correct answer that knocked them from their champions' throne. Moving to Oak Park -- Michigan, this time -- in 1972, Al was employed by Chatham Supermarkets. When they folded in the mid-1980s, he returned to college and graduated in 1990 from Concordia University in Ann Arbor and became a teacher...just like his wife. In 1992, they moved to Paola, Kansas to teach at a little two-room school, Trinity Lutheran. Moving back to Michigan in 1998, he taught for another few years, then became a school bus driver and finally completing his working life in his 80s as a SMART Connector bus driver. Always a voracious reader, he was the public library's best customer. He and Kathi had a memorable excursion last fall to Germany, Denmark, and Sweden – his first time to Europe. In June of this year, they also took a "Wild West Road Trip," taking in Route 66, the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and more. He and Ginny loved to travel, watch televised sporting events, play Scrabble, and don't anyone DARE call during Jeopardy! He also had a teeny-tiny bit of a sweet tooth and greatly preferred banana splits for dinner. He loved breakfasts at little diners -- especially waffles, corned beef hash, and V8 juice, and enjoyed a barely-more-than-raw steak on occasion. He was a league bowler for many years, and an avid golfer (well, he tried) for many more. He and Ginny were also devoted supporters of their children's sporting events, and tried to attend as many games as possible, even as the "children" were well into their middle years. Al is survived by his children Kathi Seidl, Kristin (Bill) Trewhella, and Scott Manteuffel; seven grandchildren, Michael (Lauryn) Seidl, Kyle (Jesse) Bradford, Amy (Billy) Bingham, Katy Jo Vandeneynde, and Christopher, Daniel, and Eric Trewhella; six great-grandchildren, Holly, Quinn, and Rosalie Seidl, Aubrey and Kayden Bingham, and Lily Vandeneynde. Also survived by in-laws Lynda (Gordon) Golchert and Dale Kolseth; several nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, bonus daughter Tracy Takacs, and dear friends Lori Schlegel and Rev. Richard Steensma. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Royal Oak for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; infant son Michael (April 24, 1962); daughter-in-law Elizabeth Kubik Manteuffel; sister Karen Kolseth, and niece Lise Kolseth Jordan. Arrangements through Wm. Sullivan and Sons Funeral Home, Royal Oak. Memorial service Saturday, August 22, 2026 at 11:00am, with pre-service visitation at 10:00. St. Paul Lutheran Church, 202 E.
