Baxter C. Marino

Baxter was born February 9, 1945, to the union of Donald and Exie Marino in Detroit, Michigan. To this union six children were born, unfortunately the first two passed away weeks after birth. Baxter, being the first of their children to live was affectionately known as "The Miracle Baby" and they watched over him vigilantly. He was raised and nurtured by his grandparents Charlie and Exie Brountie. This upbringing encouraged his faith, which was evident in his decision to get baptized at an early age. Baxter attended Detroit Public Schools and graduated from Eastern High School which is now known as Martin Luther King Jr. High School. He was always industrious and an excellent worker. He began his career at Conrail Railroad Company ultimately becoming a conductor and a supervisor. He loved this job with passion, and often had his family and friends come visit to show them the inner workings of the railroad industry. Baxter then began working for Chrysler Corporation in the early 1980s. He worked in numerous positions in the plant until he was hired as Union Steward and began representing countless fellow union members. He later moved to the UAW International Headquarters to work in the Civil Rights division until his retirement. Baxter could best be described as handsome, humorous, punctual, a mentor, a coach, a people person, and a family man. He was quite athletic, and competed in multiple sports including basketball, baseball, and football. His love for sports led him into coaching middle school, high school and semi-pro teams. He organized basketball tournaments, softball leagues and football teams. He would talk to players for hours about sports and life lessons. He was a father figure to many young athletes. Baxter's love for mentoring and sports led him to being a booster for multiple sports teams including Pop Warner, Locker Room Allstars, Northwest Panthers, Zion Lutheran and Central High School, just to name a few. Baxter met and married Eleanor Richardson, to this union three children were born. Baxter later married Angela Barker, and to this union two children were born. He was also fortunate to have two other children. Baxter departed this life on July 19, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Donna, Donald and Anthony, and his daughter Demeatrice Marino. Baxter leaves to celebrate and cherish his loving memory: his wife Angela Barker; 8 children, Christopher Pearson, Carlos (Reny) Marino, Darrell (Tracy) Marino, Christopher Sumrall, Anthony Barker, Jamel Pitts, Bacari Marino and Jamaisha Marino; fourteen grandchildren: Angel Marino, Alexandria Sullens, Jasmine Pearson, Lawrence McNeal, Elijah Pearson, DeCarlo Marino, Demitri Marino, Isaiah Marino, Jeremiah Pearson, Joshua Pearson, Bailey Barker, Cambrie Marino, Bacari Marino Jr., and Maliyah Marino; four great grandchildren: Demi Marino, Kora Steward, Kahron Steward and Donovan Donahue II; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation for Baxter will be held on Monday, July 29, from 1 - 3 p.m. at Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W. Eleven Mile Rd. (four blocks east of Woodward).
