Irene Ann Muirhead

Irene A. Muirhead (née Oakes), age 91, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026, in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Born on October 28, 1934, in St. Charles, Michigan, Irene was the beloved daughter of the late Harry and Vida (née Martin) Oakes. She was raised with strong faith and family values that remained the foundation of her life. Irene attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic School in Chesaning, Michigan, and continued her education at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, where she earned her teaching degree and began a lifelong commitment to education and service. A devout Catholic throughout her life, Irene dedicated many years to shaping and guiding young minds. She taught for sixteen years with Utica Community Schools, where she was known for her care, patience, and commitment to her students. Later, after relocating to Longview, Texas, she continued her educational calling as Principal of St. Mary's Catholic School, where she provided leadership and inspired countless students and teachers. Irene remained actively involved in her professional community and was a proud member of the Teachers Retirement Group through the Michigan Public Schools Employees Retirement System. She was the beloved wife of the late Kenneth Muirhead and a devoted mother to Timothy Muirhead, Suzanne (Richard) Kuhn, and Daniel (Linda) Muirhead. She was a loving and cherished grandmother to James (Courtney) Muirhead, Jason (Tranell) Muirhead, Kate (Tyler) Kivi, and Spencer Kuhn, and was also blessed with eleven great-grandchildren who brought her great joy. Family was among Irene's greatest treasures. She found her deepest happiness in the time spent with those she loved, celebrating milestones, sharing traditions, and creating lasting memories. Her faith, compassion, dedication to education, and unwavering love for her family leave a legacy that will continue through the many lives she touched. Family and friends will gather to celebrate a mass for Irene on Friday, May 29, 2026 at St. Kieran Catholic Church 53600 Mound Road (Btwn 24-25 Mile Road) Shelby, a gathering will take place from 10:30am until the time of the mass 11am.
