Joseph Waisanen

Joseph S.E. Waisanen (Joe), a beloved father, veteran, and community leader, passed away peacefully on June 23rd, 2025 at the age of 100. Born on December 9th, 1924, Joe lived a life marked by faith, service, and devotion to his family, country, and community. As a young man, Joe proudly served his nation during World War II as a fighter pilot in the 20th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron, 8th Photo Group of the 10th Army Airforce in the China/Burma/India Theater. During his enlistment he demonstrated extraordinary courage and skill as a pilot. His service to his country was a lifelong source of pride, and he remained a staunch patriot throughout his life. Joe married the love of his life, Margaret H. Roberts (Peggy), on October 20th, 1956. After 64 years of marriage, Peggy passed away on February 18th, 2021, leaving a deep void in his life. On March 3rd, 2024, Joe also endured the heartbreaking loss of his son, Joseph A. Waisanen. Despite these profound personal losses, Joe's strength and faith never wavered. Joe is survived by his son, James M. Waisanen (Jim), his daughter-in-law Tiffany M. Waisanen and grandsons Taylor J. Waisanen and Luke H. Waisanen. Joe was known for his steadfast love for his family. His greatest joys came from his roles as a husband, father and grandfather, and he cherished every moment spent with his loved ones. A dedicated leader in his community, Joe served as a Boy Scout Leader, shaping the lives of countless young men and instilling in them the values of character, integrity, and service. His leadership extended beyond scouting to his deep involvement in the Royal Oak First United Methodist Church, where he was a pillar of faith and guidance for many. His faith in God was the foundation of his life, and he found joy and purpose in serving his church and community. Joe’s life was a testament to the values of love, service, and dedication. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, leadership, and unwavering commitment to those he held dear. His memory will be cherished by all who had the privilege to know him. Funeral Monday, June 30th, in-state 10 am until time of funeral 11 am at Royal Oak First United Methodist Church, where family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of a man who gave so much to his faith, family, and country.
