In Loving Memory of Loyde A. Hickey It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Loyde A. Hickey, who passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026, at the age of 78, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on December 16, 1947, Loyde lived a life defined by service, hard work, integrity, and unwavering love for his family. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. After returning home from Vietnam, he began a distinguished career with Chrysler, where he dedicated more than 36 years of service before retiring. He also continued his commitment to serving his country by joining the United States Air Force Reserve, where he honorably served for more than 20 years, retiring with the rank of Master Sergeant (MSgt). Above all else, Loyde was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His greatest joy came from spending time with those he loved. Whether sharing stories, lending a helping hand, or simply enjoying a quiet conversation, he had a way of making everyone around him feel welcome and valued. Loyde had a lifelong appreciation for automobiles of all makes and models. One of his favorite adventures was traveling Route 66 in a Ford Mustang, a trip that created memories he cherished for years. That experience eventually inspired him to purchase his own 2026 Ford Mustang, a car he thoroughly enjoyed. Just days before his passing, his family surprised him by bringing the Mustang to his home, where he was able to take one final ride around the block with his brother. It brought him tremendous joy and became a treasured memory for everyone who shared that special moment with him. Those who knew Loyde will remember his strength, resilience, quiet determination, and the deep love he had for his family. Even during his final days, he treasured every visit, every conversation, and every moment spent with the people he loved most. Less than one month before his passing, Loyde was diagnosed with Stage IV esophageal cancer, an aggressive cancer that had already spread to multiple areas of his body. Although his illness progressed rapidly, he faced it with remarkable courage and honesty. Surrounded by the love of his family, he chose to spend his final days in the comfort of his daughter's home, where he was cared for with dignity, compassion, and unwavering devotion by his children, grandchildren, and siblings. His family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the oncology team, palliative care providers, hospice staff, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the many healthcare professionals whose compassion, dedication, and support brought comfort to Loyde and his family throughout his journey. Loyde is survived by his children, William Foster (Lisa), John Smith (Anita), David Thompson, and Jacqueline Foster; his grandchildren, David Loyde Thompson, Natalie Smith, Alex Smith, Alex Cosía, Matthew Foster, and Michael Foster; his siblings, Al Hickey (the late Sheryl), Ron Hickey (Doris), and Kathy Daleo (Gary); as well as many extended family members and dear friends who will forever cherish his kindness, strength, generosity, and the countless memories they shared with him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Linnie and Floyd Hickey; his beloved wife, Donna Hickey; and his children, Dawn Marie Thompson, and Loyde Alvin Hickey Jr. While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that Loyde's suffering has ended and that he is finally at peace. His legacy lives on through the love he gave, the example he set, and the lives he touched through his military service, his dedication to his work, and his unwavering devotion to his family. Visitation Thursday July 16th from 2:00 -8:00 p.m. and Friday July 17th from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service 10:00 a.m. at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home 8459 Hall Road (3 Blks E. of Van Dyke) Utica. Interment and Military Honors will take place following the funeral service at Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
