Mary D. Simmons

Mary Dell Simmons, age 80, peacefully departed this world on October 18, 2024, cradled in the love and care of her family. Born on February 6, 1944, within the historic walls of the Washington Square Building on the 4th floor in Royal Oak, Mary's life journey was one of unwavering compassion, dedication, and service to others. A longtime resident of Hazel Park, she recently found a new home in Oshtemo Township, where she was lovingly cared for by her devoted daughter, Tamika. Mary's heart was always open to those in need, and her lifelong mission was one of selfless service. Whether it was volunteering at various food pantries or giving her time to the Salvation Army in Royal Oak, Mary always found a way to lift the spirits of those around her. Her kindness and generosity knew no bounds, as she continuously sought to help those less fortunate. Mary worked tirelessly, both in her career and in her personal endeavors. For fifteen years, she contributed to the upkeep and care of Birmingham Place, working in maintenance. In addition, she embraced the role of a small business owner, providing cleaning services to both residential and commercial clients. No task was too small, no gesture of kindness too large-her dedication to her work and those she served was a reflection of her boundless heart. Beyond her professional life, Mary cherished moments of spiritual renewal. She found solace and joy in attending retreats with various church groups, where she could connect with others and deepen her faith. Mary was the beloved mother of Lonnie Simmons, Tabatha Simmons Morris, and Tamika Simmons, each of whom she adored and nurtured throughout her life. She was a proud grandmother to Brandon Simmons, DeMarco Compton II, Aubrie Morris, Justin Morris, and Niala Morris, and the doting great-grandmother of Alanzo Morris. Mary is also survived by her dear sister, Charlene Ludwig, and was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Larry Gillis. She was the loving aunt of Kevin Gillis and Kristen Gillis. Mary now joins her late parents, Paul and Diela Gillis, in eternal peace. Entombment will take place at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley on Saturday, October 26th at 3:00 pm in the mausoleum.
