Peggy Hughes

Peggy Jean Hughes, loving and cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, left this earthly tabernacle on June 29, 2023, just three days after her 91st birthday. Born in Puryear, Tennessee on June 26, 1932, she lived a determined, hard-working, independent life, where she often said, “You just do what you’ve got to do.” Peggy is survived by her children, Pamela Lawrence, Raymond (Maria) Lawrence, Valerie (Bruce) Fitzpatrick; grandchildren, Brandon (Stacey) Fitzpatrick, Brittany (Truc) Pham, Jessica (Michael) Urbas, Lauren (Joe) Fleming; and great-grandchildren, Kayde, Ezekiel, Silas, Ava, Elijah, Andrew, Olivia, Peyton, and Brady. She is preceded in death by her dear son, Keith Lawrence, parents, George and Ovie Hughes, and two siblings, William (Colleen) Hughes, and Sue Nell (Van) Paschall. Peggy was a dedicated stay-at-home mother who poured her heart into raising her children. Her love for her children was all-consuming. In her 40’s, Peggy returned to the workforce as an executive administrative assistant to the city manager and mayor of Oak Park, MI, where she worked for 20 years before retiring. Outside of work, Peggy loved gardening in her yard, reading, walking at Oakland Mall with dear friends, and attending her church, Central Oaks Community Church in Royal Oak (formerly Central Free Will Baptist Church), MI. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest, longest-attending member. For many years, Peggy sang with the Centralaires, a gospel quartet, with our dad and two good friends. They travelled to old-time gospel singings and even made an album. She began attending Highland Park Free Will Baptist Church and trusted Christ as her Savior as a young girl and was a faithful attendee until her health began to decline. She lived a simple life of simple pleasures and lived it determinedly strong to the end. A visitation will be held at the Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home, 705 W 11 Mile Road (four blocks east of Woodward) in Royal Oak on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, from 10am until the time of the funeral service at 11:30am.
