Thursday, Oct. 07, 2021

9AM - 12PM

Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Directors will host a free bus trip to the Great Lakes National Cemetery for veterans and their families on Thursday, October 7 th. Veterans and their guests will board the bus at the funeral home, 8459 Hall Road, Utica; 9:00 am and will return by 12:30 p.m. Reservations should be made at 586-731-2411.

“There is no charge for veterans, their spouses or dependent children to be buried at the cemetery,” said Sullivan co-owner Michael Lope. “That can be a substantial savings over the cost of the average cemetery plot in southeast Michigan, not to mention a headstone.”

Burial benefits include the grave itself, grave opening and closing, perpetual care, grave liner, a headstone or marker, a burial flag and a Presidential Memorial Certificate. Spouses’ and dependent children’s names and dates of birth and death will be inscribed on the veteran’s headstone, at no cost to the family. Veterans who choose cremation may have an urn placed in the columbarium wall.

There are 131 national cemeteries. The first were built in 1862 during the Civil War. Today, more than 3.7 million people are interred there. More than 22 million living veterans are eligible for burial in a national cemetery.
