Our History

Our History

Founded in 1906 by Funeral Director William Sullivan, the business for many years was located on Main Street in Royal Oak, first at the northwest corner of Main and Second Street, and a short time later at the northeast corner of Main and Third Streets. William Sullivan also operated a flourishing livery business at this location until 1923, when automobiles had replaced horses. He was a charter member of the Royal Oak Volunteer Fire Department, and later its chief.

William’s son James joined his father in 1932, and in 1939 relocated the funeral home to its present location at 705 West Eleven Mile Road. Several additions have been made to the building since that time.

Sons William and John joined their father as licensed funeral directors in the 1960’s, and son-in law Raymond Lope joined them in the family business upon receiving his license.

A second location was acquired at 8459 Hall Road, Utica. Today John Sullivan manages the operations of the Royal Oak funeral home, and Raymond Lope manages the Utica funeral home. His son Michael, the fourth generation, joined the business in 2006.

We are pleased to be a family-owned and operated business for over a 100 years.

OUR VISION
Wm. Sullivan & Son Funeral Home's vision is to be a progressive and innovative leader in funeral and cremation services. We will continue to be family owned and operated and dedicated to the highest ethical standards while providing meaningful service to each family's individual needs.
